Bio
Roxanne Simone, a Black Bajan British Queer metal-based visual artist who applies a multifaceted approach to her work. Simone's research into the dynamics of an intersectional diasporic body combines ethnographic fieldwork and an auto-ethnographic methodology. Simone challenges contemporary perceptions of race, queerness, gender, class, and lost histories through a non-linear exploration of time and futuristic possibilities. Within contemporary art, Simone's metalwork practice dives into reimagining physical and symbolic barriers, exploring objects, sculptures, image-making, colour, and materiality.
"My practice is multilayered with an emphasis on metal; I explore a practice-based methodology, object-making with a conceptual application by layering film, poetry, and image-making to explore narrative through the medium further. With this approach, I navigate through the Hydroforming, blacksmithing and colour. By positioning Hydroforming into metal object-making, I explore the 'other' and the ideas of the 'imperfect' objects. The objects are primarily formed by water and pressure, which allows me to draw parallels to the body; the outcomes carry a disruption and require repair and often patination to highlight the contours the process has burdened the material with. My research is navigating within contemporary Metal-objects, collages and image making by combining traditional and non-traditional making practices, object provenance, and storytelling of Indigenous and diasporic people in a non-linear experience of time."
