Art in Romney Marsh 2023

Bio

Metalsmith, Roxanne Simone is a Black Caribbean British visual artist with a multi-disciplinary approach to contemporary art and Metalsmithing. Through ethnographic fieldwork and an autoethnographic approach, Simone’s research aims to develop Metalwork with a focus on an intersectional diasporic journey by layering contemporary art practices. Simone's metalwork explores the dismantling of physical and metaphorical boundaries within the contemporary craft, investigating through colour and materiality.

"My practice is multilayered with an emphasis on Metalwork; I explore a practice-led methodology, developing a multifaceted approach to object-making with a conceptual application by layering Film, Poetry and Photography to further explore narrative through the medium. With this methodological approach, I navigate the field through the hydroforming process by engaging in the disruption of making metal objects. By positioning Hydroforming into metal object-making, I explore the 'other' and the ideas of the 'imperfect' objects. The objects are primarily formed by water and pressure, which allows me to draw parallels to the body; the outcomes carry a disruption and require repair and often patination to highlight the contours the process has burdened the material with. My research is navigating within contemporary Metalwork by combining traditional and non-traditional making practices—the process used creates a pressurised environment drawing parallels to the plight of the diasporic over time."

Copper Vessel - Winner of the Theo Fennell Best Metal Award 2020

Indigo dyeing to trade with you, my soul is copper shaded with marks of green. Trapped water shines out blue, to tell your eyes a story of pigmented skies. My heaven is Lapus and stains your touch, with a wealth of wisdom leaving evidence of your intrusion to my moment in the sun.

Traces left on you disrupt your thinking, question your privilege to stratify your curiosity. Deep ocean of blue memories, I am created by mothering,  my maker patinated me with tales of experiences. Time changed the complexion of my surface, revealing my quartz to sparkle at my preference.
